Alison Molougney from Canada

I spent three months volunteering with Sahayatri Nepal in 2009 and it was one of the most inspiring experiences of my life. During my time with this grassroots NGO I had the privilege of working with and getting to know their staff and clients, all of whom were always friendly and welcoming. Their staff consistently made me feel like I was a part of the organization and supported. During my time with Sahayatri Nepal I went on street outreach in the local community, working with women and girls in the sex-trade, many of whom had been internally trafficked. At the office I helped with workshops that focused on AIDS/HIV and safe sex education, work skills training and building community support. I also spent time writing grant applications for future projects, one of which came to fruition while I was volunteering. This project focused on giving a small group of women training to work as seamstresses and then supported them to find employment in this field within the community. I felt honored to have the opportunity to get to know these women from the beginning and see their skills and confidence progress as they moved through the program. Like so many of Sahayatri Nepal's programs this one offered vulnerable and marginalized women and girls within the community the support to feel as though they were not alone and the opportunity to improve their skills.
